Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
How will you make selections?
There is currently a lot of interest in this swim. We will carefully look at all those that showed interest, their swim resume (to include cold water and night) and their “why.” Additionally, your resume of volunteering and supporting other swims to include DCM will play a part. Our goal is to build this each year and makes sure all that want to complete this swim will have an opportunity over time.
Refund Policy:
We want to keep this simple. It is everyone’s objective to make this a successful swim and we are confident all approvals will be in place for the swim. You are making history, not only for the Nation’s Capital, in the sport of marathon swimming. If weather causes swim cancelation for the day scheduled, a rain date will be made available. If you withdraw for any other reason, you will be refunded your entry fee less your deposit prior to 45 days of your scheduled swim. Within 45 days of the swim, we will refund 50% of your entry fee. No refunds within 30 days of your swim. You may defer to a later swim in the same year or the following year.
Where should I stay?
Anywhere! We meet at Columbia Island Marina in Arlington, VA and drop off there as an FYI.
What happens if the water quality is not up to DDOE standards?
We are hopeful given the formal regulations and our partnership with the DC DDOE that there will be a high probability of swims occurring on the planned dates. However, we cannot control weather and its affect on water quality. We will offer an alternate date(s) for each swim but cannot guarantee if conditions are out of standard. Depending upon environmental conditions, we also consider a “southern course” of approximately 18 miles. We will provide information as dates approach if we see any any issues arising.
What if I do not have a kayaker or support crew?
WaveOne Open Water has been conducting swims in DC since 2009 and has contact with many swimmers that are willing to support as kayaker, crew or observer. We are happy to put you in touch with people that can help you out.
What about a support boat?
We have an excellent relationship with Extensive Marine. Chip Johnson grew up on the Potomac and is one of the best know watermen in the area. He supplies us boats and captains, as well as advice on course modifications regarding tides and weather to provide the fastest routes and successful swims.
